Ed Dwight - The Space Race

Ruby Jones speaks with Denver artist Ed Dwight, the first Black astronaut candidate for NASA’s space program. Dwight is featured in The Space Race, a documentary about Afrofuturism and Black astronauts who sought to break the bonds of social injustice to reach for the stars. Film directors Diego Hurtado de Mendoza and Lisa Cortés profile the pioneering pilots, scientists, and engineers who joined NASA to serve their country in space, even as their country failed to achieve equality for them back on Earth.

At Clyde’s, formerly incarcerated individuals cook up meals that range from sublime to soul-crushing. Even as the surly shop owner tries to keep them under her thumb, their kitchen mentor, Montrellous, guides them on a quest to create the perfect sandwich – and reclaim their lives. Through this shared pursuit, each cook must face their demons on their personal journeys towards purpose, self-worth, and even salvation.

Alicia "Lisa" Young - Black Nativity

Ruby Jones talks to Alicia "Lisa" Young, director of Black Nativity, playing December 1 to 30 at Vintage Theatre in Aurora, Colorado.

Black Nativity, the joyous holiday musical, is a modern retelling of the traditional account of the Nativity story from an African American perspective. Using gospel music, African beats, dramatic dance, and a biblical narrative Black Nativity opened for a limited run of 57 performances at Broadway's 41st St. Theatre on December 11, 1961. It was written and conceived by one of the legendary leaders of the Harlem Renaissance: Black playwright, poet, novelist, and social activist Langston Hughes.

donnie l. betts - Gem of the Ocean

"Gem of the Ocean" is the first of 10 chronological plays by the legendary Black American playwright, August Wilson, creator of the famed "Century Cycle" collection. The collection, also known as "The Pittsburgh Cycle," features decade-by-decade productions that depict the Black experience. betts discusses the unique collection and Wilson's ability to portray the intricacies of the human spirit, along with his role in bringing "Gem of the Ocean" to life.
