Vol.006 Visa Denied? Kenya Girl Founded Coding School to Subvert Stereotypes at 19
The pursuit of better programming skills is common for programmers. However, such a pursuit was not easy for Martha. For the lack of such education resources in Kenya, Martha, a top-scorer in the national exam, was determined to spend her summer prior university in the U.S. to horn her programming skills. Unfortunately, the plan was in vain due to the rejection of her visa. This experience enlightened her the fact of the lack of such education resources in Kenya. Hence, despite opposition from family and friends, she gave up on the prestigious scholarship together with the offer from a medical school while founding a coding school when she was 19 to promote technology education for East Africa youths.
It is not a secure job, but a meaningful journey. The lack of such education resources gave her the confidence to persevere. She extracted the belief of helping others from the tribal heritage of Africa while gaining the courage against all odds from Africa's communal society.
The interviewee of this volume is Martha Chumo Wurm, a lady from Kenya. She was the founder of Nairobi Dev School and worked in Autodesk Foundation when she was in college to help on its expansion. In 2014, she was the nominee for the Anzisha Prize for Entrepreneurs in Africa and later started working for Anisha. UNESCO was inspired by her story and she became the namesake for the UNESCO campaign "Searching for Martha" that strives to empower Africa women with technology. This campaign enabled her to give talks in various integral international conferences as a representative and even to interview Bill Gates in person.
In Vol.006, Martha has sincerely shared with us her experience and her understanding of African's culture and heritage. Now, Martha's coding school has expanded outside Kenya including places such as Sudan. Her pursuit to support entrepreneurial African youths has never ceased. Looking at culture and history; future and visons: the 26 years old Martha keeps exploring possibilities of Kenya youths while continuing to get inspired by the rich African continent.
