What is Normal?

Whether in therapy session or at happy hour, Angee & Jaime are frequently asked, “Is this normal?” or “Am I normal?” To these questions, the therapeutic reply is, “What IS normal?”

In the field of mental health, “normal” changes throughout time. In our world, it changes throughout cultures or religions.

Angee & Jaime break down the definition of “normal” and how this affects each person’s interactions in daily life.

Don’t Tickle Away the Sadness

Pronouns are hard, as Jaime has been saying her entire life. Parenting is hard as the parent holds their child’s emotions. Merge those two issues and listen to how Angee & Jaime navigate these. Angee & Jaime don’t 100% agree on these same life lessons regarding emotional regulation, swearing, teaching their children about sexual organs and terms, & apologizing/forgiveness.

Listen to how therapists who are “supposed to know how to work with emotions” work with their children’s emotions daily. Or in Jaime’s case, hear how she teaches her husband how to hold emotional space for others rather than his default reaction to “tickle away the sadness."

In the end, parenting is hard; emotions are hard; this is a life long journey we are on together if you are either a child to someone and/or parent to someone.

Jaime’s Story

Curious about who Jaime is and why is she entered the field of social work or therapy? Listen in to her childhood as a transracial Korean adoptee, school experience, and jump from post-adoption services to mental health. Honestly, be impressed. She told this story in this length of time because anyone who knows Jaime knows her stories are at MINIMUM 19 hours long.

Forgiveness
