Athletic Director Dr. Joe Karlgaard joins J.P. Heath in the debut episode of Rice Owls Insider to discuss the state of athletics following the Coronavirius outbreak. Dr. Karlgaard also details the progress on and off the playing surface during the entire 2019-20 athletics season. Plus, he shares how social distancing is progressing at the Karlgaard family home.
Rice Head Men's Basketball Coach Scott Pera joins JP Heath to reflect on the 2019-20 basketball season and provide clarity on the overall trajectory of Owls basketball. Plus, Pera reveals how the Coronavirus is already impacting the program's preparations for the upcoming 20-21' season. Pera also tells JP how his family is using the 'The Bachelor' to make the most of the current 'stay-at-home' order.
This week, JP Heath visits with Rice Women's Basketball Head Coach Tina Langley to discuss the abrupt ending to this past season but also the most memorable moments. Plus, Dr. Bishop from Houston Methodist provides expert insight on the global pandemic and the response from Rice University and others locally.
Owls Head Football Coach Mike Bloomgren joins JP for the full show to detail the challenges the Coronavirus is causing his team's preparation for the 2020 season. This includes holding student-athletes accountable to at-home workouts and building off of the portion of spring ball Rice was able to endure. Also, Bloomgren explains how different recruiting has become during this time, while also highlighting some of the key returnees on both sides of the football. And finally, JP extracts a bit of binge-watching behavior from the coach during quarantine (or lack thereof) that may shock you.
Rice Head Baseball Coach Matt Bragga visits with JP Heath to discuss some of the 'unknowns' facing the Owls program following the suspension of the season. Bragga also assesses the progress the team was making in the second year under his direction, and reveals why he tends to always take a positive approach to the most unwanted circumstances. Plus, Bragga describes how the food at home is counteracting his workout routine during the stay-at home order.
Both Rice track and field head coaches stop by to visit with JP Heath this week: Jim Bevan (Head Women's Coach) and Jon Warren (Head Men's Coach).
