Did you know there are over 700 community gardens in the city of New York? From rooftops to empty lots, it seems that New Yorkers are increasingly taking advantage of any open spaces to start cultivating food. In 'Like Farmer, Like Dog,' we visit urban farmers to find out what it takes to create a green spot in the middle of a concrete jungle and meet their canine companions!
Like Farmer, Like Dog is a series exploring the relationship between urban farmers and their canine companions in New York City.
In the first episode we hung out under the Williamsburg Bridge at North Brooklyn Farms with Emma and her feisty pup Jam. This time, we’re taking a trek up to the Randall’s Island Urban Farm to meet Erica Harte and Baxter. Erica is a farmer and educator in the farm’s Edible Education Program. We spend a morning learning from Erica as she teaches a group of first grade students about how their food grows, sustainability, and urban agriculture. Then, we head back to Bushwick to meet Baxter and hear about his history as a farm dog and his life in Brooklyn.
