One of the most eagerly anticipated films of the year, BLADE RUNNER 2049, directed by SICARIO and ARRIVAL's Denis Villeneuve, and produced by the original film's director Ridley Scott, is being hailed by many as "One of the greatest sequel's ever made". And it just may be. We're fairly certain however that more than a few filmgoers will exit the theater scratching their heads and / or pissed to no end as it may not be exactly what they expected. With a near three hour running time BLADE RUNNER 2049 has the luxury to more deeply explore the philosophical and totemic elements of Phillip K. Dick's science fiction universe to a far greater degree than did other films such as TOTAL RECALL, MINORITY REPORT, A SCANNER DARKLY, THE MAN IN THE HIGH CASTLE and even Scott's original BLADE RUNNER itself. But whether that "exploration" is interpreted by the viewer as pretentious or fascinating as hell (we fall into the later category) is a matter of, not unlike the scenario in which the characters in Dick's universe often find themselves, perception, world view and the mental / philosophical baggage said individual brings into the theater along with that extra large tub of popcorn.
